My Soap Box
Call me crazy, but I hate New Year’s Resolutions! They really irk me. The lack of follow-through is astonishing. Why is it that you wait until this magical day to start a new habit or attempt to quit a bad one? I understand the concept. You want to start anew at the start of a new year. That whole new year new me business; but the New York Post, after polling 2,000 Americans, found that on average it takes 32 days to break a New Year’s Resolution. However, 68% of Americans report breaking their resolution EVEN SOONER than that! They found that one in seven Americans never even believe they will follow through with their resolution.
HOW WILD!
So I rest my case, what is the point?
I want to be the best version of myself daily and so that means changing habits when I find them such as including more strength training in my running plans as that is where I am always lacking.
Again, why wait until the new year to do that?
Not to mention the influx of people that flood the gyms at the new year is VERY ANNOYING. Make it a habit so I know when to expect the chaos at the gym or GTFO my way, please, and thank you!
Well, that was a little aggressive, but I know all the gym rats think it so shoot, I’ll say it!
How to Make a Change and Stick to it!
If you are going to make a change, I want you to be successful. I have always been most successful creating a habit when I change things little by little so it seems more feasible to maintain. I am not one for quitting things cold turkey as it has one of the lowest success rates, and going all in on something making drastic changes often becomes too hard and overwhelming.
For example, someone trying to make running a part of their regular routine should start with a walk/jog following a plan similar to my FREE postpartum return to running guide gradually increasing their running bouts so as to avoid delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) which is often what prevents people from returning to the gym because they went WAYYY to hard in the paint meaning they did too much too soon!
